While the first conversations about John aren’t exactly inspirational, they do have sex and are in a committed relationship. Suvari’s carefree pleasure contrasts well with Horvath’s pouting.
What Happens In “What Lies Beneath”?
With that in mind, “What Lies Below” mostly depends on its underappreciated core scenario: what would you do if a beautiful eccentric tried to be your stepfather?
Tucker’s arrogant, halting tone of voice, as well as his character’s obsession with fertility stones and odd habit of smelling his own balled-up tee-shirts, are intended to indicate to viewers that John isn’t entirely genuine. Imagine “Legally Blonde,” but with a clever and handsome man—John also appears in Libby’s dreams, swimming into a small pool of psychedelic, orangish-pink light.
He gets a bit too comfortable with Libby when she has her period; “you have a little red in your hair,” he adds without any passion or excitement in his voice. In the end, this is also instructive.
John looks quirky, but he could always use a bit more. On the one hand, writer/director Braden R. Duemmler never takes the absurdity of being threatened by a well-dressed pedant too seriously.
Why not go a bit farther with the sheer campiness of the premise if your film is a coming-of-age horror thriller with a beautiful stalker who may or may not be driven by a brain parasite?

When Will What Lies Below Be Released?
‘What Lies Below’ was published in video-on-demand format in the United States and Canada on December 4, 2020. The film was not released in other European countries until February 22, 2021, following which it was released in the United Kingdom.
