The Conjuring is a 2014 horror film directed by James Wan and based on a true story of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who helped to capture a family of demonic haunting known as “The Warrens.” The movie is loosely based on the real-life paranormal cases of the Warrens, and it follows the true story of a Rhode Island farmer and his family who were plagued by a witch and her haunting. The Poltergeist remake is the second film in the Conjuring franchise and is loosely based on a true story of a Rhode Island couple and their family who allegedly encountered a poltergeist and their attempts to capture and exorcise the spirit.

To celebrate the release of Annabelle 2, we thought we’d make a comprehensive guide to the films! For this, we had to do a little comparison, and we found that the films are actually fairly similar. We hope you find this guide useful, and we’ll see you next time!
Since its release in 2013, The Conjuring has ruled the box office. The main series follows Ed and Lorraine Warren as they chase specters, witches, and ghouls while fighting to rescue families from demonic control. The first two Conjuring films are based on files from some of their most horrific encounters, while the rest of the franchise’s flicks, such as Annabelle and The Nun, serve as origin tales for the demonic creatures who torment the Warrens.
You may watch all of The Conjuring Universe films in the order in which they were released in theaters, but seeing them in the order in which events occur is more fascinating and perhaps more terrifying. As a result, continue reading to learn about the release dates and chronological sequence in which to see The Conjuring and Annabelle films.
The best way to see The Conjuring and Annabelle films is in this sequence.
Although we favor the historical order, the release sequence is more appropriate in light of how the ideas developed. You start with The Nun, which is set in 1952, and then go on to The Conjuring 2.

The Nun is number one (2018)
The Catholic Church invites a nun who is nearing the end of her vows (postulancy) to a Romanian monastery. A Catholic priest who specializes in demonic procession and dealing with very evil circumstances summons her. The Catholic church has asked them to investigate a nun’s alleged suicide.
According to their findings, the abbey’s dark and sinister underbelly is fueled by a dark and evil force. The history of the abbey is murky and mysterious.
Sister Irene (a postulant nun) and Father Burke (a Catholic priest) discover that the abbey’s dreadful powers and nature are the result of an ancient demon. This monster takes on the persona of a nun from the monastery. They discover that all of the nuns have perished (murdered by the rampaging demon), with the final nun taking her own life to avoid becoming possessed.
The pair’s investigation into the abbey’s mysterious beginnings is still ongoing. The abbey’s previous owner, a medieval lord, conducted a ritual that opened a portal to hell. The Catholic knights sealed this doorway with the blood of Christ when they murdered the duke.
In the timeline of the film, the abbey has been destroyed by World War II bombs. The splintering and reopening of this previously closed medieval doorway has inadvertently resulted from this destruction. The nun and priest pair now enter, completely oblivious to the increasing terror in the monastery. As evil grows increasingly established and powerful, the two most powerful people must go within and harness their light to fight the coming darkness.
The demon manipulates and terrorizes the two as they attempt to shut the portal and save the town. The devil will go to great lengths to possess and abuse the young, chaste nun. The demon’s goal is to open the portal and cause agony to anyone who attempt to shut it, ensuring that evil may continue to torment more souls and innocents.
2. Annabelle: Inventive+ Imaginative+ Imaginative+ Imagin (2017)
Mr. Samuel Mullins (Anthony LaPaglia) creates handcrafted wooden toys and dolls. He seems to be happy with his wife, Esther (Miranda Otto), and daughter, Bee (Samara Lee). That is, until Bee is ripped from their grasp in a car accident.
Sister Charlotte (Stephanie Sigman) and a small group of young girls from an orphanage, most notably a wheelchair/crutch-bound girl named Janice, move into the Mullins’ old home many years later (Talitha Bateman). Mrs. Mullins is bedridden at this time owing to a “condition,” and Mr. Mullins seems silent and distant.
Janice disobeys her mother’s orders to stay away from one locked room, but she feels compelled to go inside and look around. This is the Mullins’ daughter’s room. Bee’s soul seems to be bringing her to the doll. Strange things start to happen about the home. Young girls are the ones who are thrust into unfamiliar circumstances initially.
Janice’s best friend Linda (Lulu Wilson) is the first to see what’s going on and has a short conversation with Mr. Mullins about it. Things soon get out of hand. Linda persuades Sister Charlotte to approach Mrs. Mullins about the cause of all the problems so far – the doll. The Mullins seem to understand and be aware of what is going on, indicating that it has been dealt with before; nevertheless, this isn’t enough to save them this time.
Annabelle is number three (2014)
Mia and John Gordon are happily married and expecting their first child in Santa Monica, California. John is approaching the end of medical school and has little time to dedicate to his loving wife, so he buys her an antique and unusual doll named Annabelle.
Their next-door neighbors, on the other hand, are attacked soon after by two members of a satanic cult who break into their houses and attack them after killing their neighbors. Mia and John are rescued by police officials, and Mia is ordered to rest until the baby is born. Their house, however, is damaged by fire, and Mia gives birth prematurely to a baby girl named Leah.
Mia throws Annabelle, the doll, in the garbage before the family moves to Pasadena. Nonetheless, when transferring her things to her new home, she comes upon the doll in a box. Mia has weird events and meets Evelyn, a bookstore employee. She also discovers that Leah’s soul is being sought by a terrible cult. When John and Mia request Father Perez’s help with Annabelle, the priest is shot and brought to the hospital. Who now has a chance of saving Leah’s soul?
4. The Haunting (2013)
Carolyn and Roger Perron, together with their five children Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy, and April, move to Harrisville, Rhode Island in 1971. Their dog refuses to enter the home, and one of the girls finds a basement door that has been closed up.
The dog is found dead the next morning. Over the following several days, many paranormal occurrences occur. While Roger is gone in Florida, the activity reaches a peak one night when Carolyn is confined in the basement while an old woman-like ghost assaults one of her children.
Carolyn enlists the help of Ed and Lorraine Warren, well-known paranormal investigators. The Warrens undertake an initial investigation and conclude that the home may need exorcism, but this cannot be done without further proof and Catholic Church approval.
Through their research into the house’s history, Ed and Lorraine discover that it was formerly the home of Bathsheba, an accused witch who committed herself after cursed anybody who would take her belongings. They also uncover many stories of murders and suicides in houses that have since been built on the property.
Ed and Lorraine return to the house to gather evidence for the exorcism. That night, one of the daughters sleepwalks into her sister’s room, exposing a hidden tunnel beneath a wardrobe. Lorraine enters the tunnel and falls through the floorboards into the basement, where she is confronted by Bathsheba’s possessed victims’ spirits. Bathsheba used each of these ladies as a scapegoat to kill her children.
Lorraine and Ed submit their evidence to the Church in order to schedule an exorcism, while the Perron family finds refuge at a hotel. Carolyn returns home, possessed, with two of her children, Christine and April. Lorraine and Ed rush over to the house, where they see Carolyn trying to stab her daughter.
Even though Carolyn escapes and attempts to kill her daughter, April, again, Ed decides to perform the exorcism himself after subduing her. Lorraine may persuade Carolyn not to kill her kid by recalling a childhood memory, allowing Ed to complete the exorcism and rescue Carolyn and her daughter.
5. Annabelle Returns (2019)
After two nurses, Debbie and Camilla, reported that the doll often participated in violent activity in their apartment, demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren decided to welcome the Annabelle doll into their home in 1968. The Annabelle doll, it just so happens, draws demonic spirits that attack the Warren family on their way home, but he survives, and Annabelle is placed in a glass case in their artifact room and blessed by Father Gordon to ensure that the evil is suppressed.
The Warrens greet Mary Ellen, who has been entrusted with babysitting their little daughter, Judy, while they work on a case overnight, four years later. Judy runs across the ghost of a priest at school soon after, and it begins to follow her, becoming attached.
Daniela, Mary Ellen’s friend, shows up to the Warren home unexpectedly, fascinated by the possibility of connecting with the dead following her father’s death. After exploring the whole house, she eventually finds the keys to the artifact room in Warren’s home office and sneaks inside.
In order to find the greatest method to contact her dead father, she starts engaging with strange and sensitive objects. She accidentally leaves Annabelle’s glass case unlocked on her trip, and the horror begins shortly after with the release of Bee Mullins’ haunting spirit. The Ferryman, the Bride, demonic samurai armor, a haunting Feeley Meeley board game, and the Black Shuck are among the spirits Annabelle releases throughout the night.
When Mary Ellen’s crush, Bob, pays her a visit, the Black Shuck monster attacks him and forces him to escape into the backyard. Mary Ellen is then attacked by the Ferryman ghost, while Judy is challenged by Annabelle. Daniela is also held captive in the artifact room, where she is tormented by a spirit-possessed monkey toy and an old CRT television that allegedly has the ability to predict the future.
The Curse of La Llorona is number six (2019)
La Llorona is a fictional character (La Llorona). The Woman in Tears A frightening apparition trapped between Heaven and Hell, destined by her own free choice. The mere mention of her name has frightened people all across the world for ages. In a former life, she murdered her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself into the whirling river after them while sobbing in pain.
Her tears had now become inexhaustible. They’re lethal, and anybody who hears her midnight death scream will perish. La Llorona haunts the shadows and preys on children, seeking a mate to replace her own. Over the ages, her appetite has become more ravenous…and her methods have grown more terrifying.
In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona haunts the night—and the children. A social worker and her young children are rapidly drawn into a frightening ethereal dimension after ignoring the disturbing warnings of a deranged lady accused of child endangerment. A disillusioned priest and the mysticism he practices on the edges of fear and religion may be their last hope of escaping La Llorona’s wrath.
Be wary of her eerie shriek… She’ll go to any extent to entice you into the shadows. Because her anguish has no end in sight. Compassion isn’t a word that comes to mind when it comes to her soul.
And there’s no getting out of La Llorona’s curse.
The Conjuring 2 is a sequel to the horror film The Conjuring (2016)
At 1977, the Hodgson family begins to experience strange occurrences in their home in Enfield, London. In her nightmares, Janet, the second oldest of four children, is seen sleepwalking and conversing with an entity dressed as an angry older man. The old man insists that the house belongs to him. The Hodgson boys and their mother Peggy eventually see paranormal activity right in front of their eyes, prompting them to seek refuge with their neighbors.
When the media attempts to interview the Hodgsons, Janet is possessed by the spirit of an elderly man called Bill Wilkins, who previously lived and died in the house. Throughout the possession, Wilkins claims that he enjoys tormenting the family and that he wants to reclaim his home.
As Janet’s demonic possession symptoms worsen, the Warrens are contacted and requested to assist the local church in undertaking an investigation to establish if Janet’s possession is genuine. Lorraine warns him against becoming too involved in the case, fearing that her vision of Ed’s death would come true, but she reluctantly agrees to accompany him to London. Lorraine has another vision of the demonic nun in Ed’s study, this time with the demon speaking its name, which Lorraine scribbles in her Bible.
While staying at the Hodgson house, Ed and Lorraine consult with various paranormal investigators, including Maurice Grosse and Anita Gregory, regarding the case’s authenticity. They also attempt to communicate with Wilkins’ spirit in order to convince him to stop haunting the family. After seeing Janet being possessed, Gregory reveals video evidence of Janet deliberately trashing the kitchen as if it were a prank, proving the haunting to be false.
In light of this discovery, Ed and Lorraine feel obliged to leave the family, but they soon discover that the spirit of Wilkins is simply a pawn being used by the demonic nun to torture Janet and destroy her will. Lorraine then realizes that the demonic nun has blocked her abilities, preventing her from comprehending Janet’s imprisonment.
When Ed and Lorraine arrive at the Hodgson house, they discover Janet has been possessed once again, and the rest of the Hodgson family is stuck outside. Ed walks inside the house by himself. A neighboring tree is struck by lightning, resulting in a jagged stump that mimics the object that impaled Ed in Lorraine’s vision. Janet is found at the window, ready to leap onto the stump and commit herself.
He grabs Janet just in time, but he’s holding a curtain that’s being torn from its rings by his and Janet’s combined weight. Lorraine remembers putting the demon’s name, Valak, in her Bible. She walks inside the house and confronts Valak, thus damning it to Hell. Lorraine saves Janet and Ed from the jaws of the monster.
When Ed and Lorraine return to the United States, they add a zoetrope toy called “The Crooked Man” to their collection, which they exhibit beside April’s music box and the Annabelle doll.
8. The Conjuring: The Devil Forcibly Forcibly Forcibly Forcibly Forcibly Forcibly Forcibly Forc (2021)
In Brookfield, Connecticut, in 1981, demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren film the exorcism of 8-year-old David Glatzel in front of his family, sister Debbie, her boyfriend Arne Johnson, and Father Gordon. During the exorcism, Arne requests that the demon occupy his body rather than David’s. When Ed suffers a heart attack and is sent to the hospital in a vegetative state, he witnesses the demon move from David’s body to Arne’s.
The following month, Ed wakes up in the hospital and tells Lorraine that he witnessed the devil possess Arne’s body. She sends the cops to the kennel, telling them that disaster is on the way. Debbie’s kennel is above Arne and Debbie’s apartment, which they return to. Arne murders his landlord, Bruno Sauls, by stabbing him 22 times while under the influence of demonic possession.
With the Warrens’ support, his case becomes the first in the country to utilize demonic possession as a defense, prompting an investigation into David’s original possession. The Warrens then come upon Kastner, a former priest who formerly dealt with the cult of the Disciples of the Ram, and discover a demonic curse conveyed via a witch’s totem. He tells them that some occultists placed the totem on purpose, casting a curse on the Glatzels and putting David in charge.
The Warrens go to Danvers, Massachusetts, to investigate Katie Lincoln’s stabbing death. At Katie’s missing friend Jessica’s home, detectives found a totem. Lorraine conjures up a vision to recreate the murder, and discovers that Jessica stabbed Katie while under the influence of demonic possession, then jumped to her death from a cliff, enabling authorities to recover her body. Lorraine touches the hand of the deceased to aid with the search for the occultist. Lorraine has a vision of the occultist attempting to force Arne to commit suicide, but she is stopped just in time. Lorraine feels threatened by the occultist, and she tells Ed that the connection is two-way.
To continue their research, the Warrens return to their Connecticut home. Ed passes out momentarily and is subsequently convinced by the occultist to kill Lorraine, but Drew apprehends him. They later found the totem in their house, hidden inside a vase of black flowers.
Drew gives Ed a book on Stregherian witchcraft that he found and says that the occultist’s altar must be destroyed to remove the curse. They believe the region is being targeted by an occultist after learning Katie attended neighboring Fairfield University. Lorraine seeks help from Kastner, who confesses that he has raised a daughter called Isla in violation of the Catholic Church’s clerical celibacy rule.
Lorraine’s interest in the occult developed as a consequence of his study, and she ultimately became an occultist, he tells her. Kastner allows Lorraine access to the underground, where she finds the altar and is subsequently found by the occultist, who murders him. Soon later, Ed comes and uses a sledgehammer to break down a closed drain hole to get entrance to the tunnels.
He is momentarily possessed by the devil and tries to murder Lorraine, but she reminds him of their first encounter and love. Ed reawakens and destroys the altar, saving himself, Lorraine, and Arne from certain death. The witch returns to her shattered altar after failing to finish the curse, only to be killed by the monster she called.
In their chamber of treasures, Ed puts the cup from the altar beside the Valak picture and the Annabelle doll. Arne is convicted of manslaughter, but owing to his marriage to Debbie while imprisoned, he only serves five years of his sentence. Ed shows Lorraine a replica of the gazebo where they first kissed.
