After my initial excitement about Rurouni Kenshin: Origins, it quickly wore off. When I saw the synopsis of the film, I was excited to see how it compared with the manga. The film’s final act, however, left me frustrated. Things seemed to come so fast, so violently, so unpredictably, that it felt as if the film was just trying to slap us in the face, trying to say “You were watching the right thing, now that ending is the real ending”.
While the series may have had its ups and downs, it has had perhaps one of the most powerful journeys of any animated show of all time. One that will not only leave the viewers speechless, but also leave the fans of the series with a bittersweet taste of closure.
With instant success, comes instant failure. And instant failure, comes instant redemption. With this in mind, Rurouni Kenshin: Origins is a typical show about a typical family trying to survive in a world of constant war and corruption. This anime is a sequel to a manga and anime series of the same name and features the typical family dynamics we all know and love. The story is typical of a shounen anime: A new fighter enters the world of sword fighting, and faces typical villains and allies that we know and love.
‘Rurouni Kenshin: Origins’ skipped the pacing, action, and romance of the original OVA series to go all in on the character development for fans of the original manga and anime.
