Summary of The Animatrix: Movies
After the first segment, The Matrix, there were nine short films released. The only two shorts we’ll need to know about for this overview are The Second Renaissance Part 1 and 2.
In a nutshell, people screw up. Humans create Artificial Intelligence robots in the early twenty-first century to help them with their daily tasks. When one of the bots fails and murders its owner, the humans respond by murdering all of the bots. Humans go to battle and burn the sky to shut off solar energy, despite the robots’ pleas for a peaceful settlement. Humans are powerless against the robots and surrender. Many individuals choose to end their lives in the Matrix, an artificial simulation in which they enter a dream state and experience a virtual existence set around the late 1990s. The remaining human opposition is kidnapped and forcefully integrated into the Matrix over time. Because the sun is no longer shining, the machines now rely on the bioelectricity created by the sleeping people.
What is the Matrix, exactly?
The Matrix is a shared simulation in which the majority of the world’s population are enrolled. People’s physical bodies are sleeping, but their brains are in a dream state in which they think they are living in the late twentieth century. The Matrix’s physical principles are based on classical physics, which determines people’s motions.
The catch is that each thought only follows the rules because it feels it is required to do so. These laws can be broken if one can look beyond the reality that their environment is a simulation. When a character in the Matrix dies, they die in the real world as well. This is caused by the mind’s belief that it is dying, which causes the body to die.

A group of rebels lead by Morpheus is liberating individuals from the Matrix in the year 2199. The squad lives in Zion, the final human city, a community of individuals who have been released from the Matrix as well as those who were born in the real world.
Morpheus is pursuing a prophesy given to him by an entity known as The Oracle, according to which he would locate a person who can disobey all of the Matrix’s laws. They call this individual “The One.”
The Agents, lead by Smith, are gatekeeper programs charged with locating and eliminating anybody who attempts to breach the system. They have increased speed and agility, and they can absorb anybody who is connected to the Matrix.
Mr Anderson, sometimes known as Neo, is a Matrix hacker. The crew frees Neo from the Matrix when Morpheus thinks he is The One. The commanding officer, Trinity, starts to fall in love with Neo.
Neo is told by the Oracle that he is not The One and that he would have to choose between his life and Morpheus’ in the future.
Cypher, another crew member, resents Morpheus for forcing him out of the Matrix, believing that he was happier there. He strikes a bargain with Agent Smith to be reintroduced into the Matrix as a rich and prosperous individual. In exchange, he leaves a tracker, which the agents use to capture Morpheus.
In the actual world, Cypher unplugs and murders a few crew members, but he is murdered before reaching Neo.
The only option to prevent Smith from obtaining Zion’s location from him is to unplug and kill Morpheus, but Neo decides to preserve Morpheus. Neo and Trinity enter the Matrix, assault the building with firearms aplenty, and climb to the top. Neo deflects an agent’s gunshots, demonstrating that he is The One. The helicopter is used by Neo and Trinity to eliminate the agents and rescue Morpheus.
Morpheus and Trinity depart the Matrix, but Smith appears and shoots the phone, preventing Neo from leaving. Rather of fleeing, Neo decides to battle Smith and puts up a strong fight until Smith obtains the upper hand. Neo makes a break for it, assuming that an agent can’t be killed, while Morpheus leads him to an escape.
Smith shoots Neo before he can get to the phone. Trinity says that the Oracle informed her that she will fall in love with The One as his mind starts to expire. She declares her love for Neo and tells him that his mind is merely pretending to die, but he is The One and cannot die.
Neo rises to his feet and recognizes the Matrix for what it is: software. Agents attempt to shoot Neo, but he deflects the bullets. Smith attempts furiously to attack Neo, but he’s no match for the quickness of someone who has escaped the Matrix’s programming. Neo assimilates Smith, kills him from inside, and departs the Matrix just in time for Morpheus to deactivate a group of Sentinals tasked with destroying the ship with an EMP.
Neo tells the system that he will ultimately release everyone at the conclusion of The Matrix. He has no idea that he is only a system’s measure of control.

Six months after the events of The Matrix, Zion is besieged by legions of Sentinels from above. Commander Lock opposes the prophesy and Morpheus’ squandering of resources in search of The Oracle, who has been absent for some time.
Smith was not destroyed by Neo, and he evolved into an exile program with the power to clone himself onto anybody in the Matrix with whom he can establish physical contact. Smith clones himself on a crew member named Bane, and Smith’s consciousness departs the Matrix as part of Bane’s mind, giving him real-world control.
Finally, the Oracle makes contact. The Oracle’s bodyguard, Seraph, leads Neo to her, and she shows herself to be a program that professes to be on the side of the humans since she was built to comprehend them. She tells Neo to go to the Keymaker, an exile program kept captive by the Merovingian, a strong program.
Multiple Smiths come up after she goes and attempt to clone onto Neo, who battles his way out, recognizing he’s no match for the many Smiths.
The council permits two ships to assist Morpheus, against Lock’s desires; one of them is headed by Niobe, who was formerly with Morpheus.
While Merovingian refuses to give up the Keymaker, Neo’s mate Persephone (another program) transports them to the Keymaker in return for a kiss, as she wishes to taste genuine love for the first time.
The gang arrives at a safe house with the Keymaker, who tells that Neo must unlock a door in a certain building to go to the Source after a tremendous struggle and a fantastic highway chase/fight scenario. He gives Neo a key (access) that can only be used on the door if the building’s electricity is turned off.
The other two squads target the electrical systems while Neo goes toward the door. In the actual world, Niobe succeeds, but the other squad is slain by a Sentinal. Trinity goes into the Matrix to finish the job. She is assaulted by an Agent while terminating the power before Neo opens the door.
Neo learns from the Source that this is The One’s sixth appearance. Each time, Zion is destroyed, and The One is obliged to repopulate Zion with 23 individuals from the Matrix. Everyone in the Matrix will be terminated if The One refuses. The previous five “The Ones” had let Zion and its inhabitants to be destroyed in order to preserve the surviving members of the Matrix, but Neo refuses because he loves Trinity and cannot lose her.
In desperation, Trinity jumps from a window, but is shot by the agent in mid-flight. Neo flies to her, catches her, and removes the bullet from her. Trinity is saved from impending death when Neo digitally performs CPR on her.
Morpheus is practically in tears when he discovers that the prophesy was a deception in the actual world. They are assaulted, and Neo manages to halt the Sentinals with his thoughts; he then passes out.
At Zion, Smith, who is in control of Bane, sets off an EMP and sabotages the Sentinals’ first line of defense, causing them to be murdered mercilessly. As the movie draws to a close, we witness both Neo and Bane comatose.

We discover that Neo has wirelessly linked to the machines and jacked himself into the Subway Station, a kind of digital limbo outside the Matrix. The Train-Man program, which transports programs into their digital afterlife, is in charge of the location. Consider it trash collection on a programmatic level.
Neo encounters a family of programs (from the Machine World) that have generated Sati, a kid software on their own. They aren’t supposed to act like this, but their artificial intellect drives them to create and love. The Merovingian has negotiated a deal with the parent programs to securely transport Sati to the Matrix. Neo attempts to force his way in as the train comes, but this area was made by the Train-Man, who is all-powerful and knocks Neo to the ground.
Morpheus, Trinity, and Seraph track down Merovingian and compel him to let Neo out of the train. Neo speaks with the Oracle, who offers him no guidance. This is the first time in history that an abnormality (The One) has not decided to destroy and rebuild Zion. Smith is spreading like a virus and will soon eat everything, she only knows.
Later, Smith clones himself on the Oracle and can now foresee the most likely course of events, but he can’t see beyond a decision that hasn’t yet been taken.
Neo and Trinity are getting ready to go to Machine City in order to make a deal. They are attacked by Smith (Bane), who blinds Neo. Neo acquires machine-vision as a result of his wireless connection to the machines, which is shown in golden. They leave together.
Thousands of Sentinals assault, resulting in an all-out conflict. Niobe and Morpheus successfully fly a ship into the pier, triggering an EMP that disables all Sentinals. Although the war has been won, the machines will shortly deploy additional Sentinals.
Hundreds of Sentinals assault Neo and Trinity as they approach the Machine City. Neo’s mental connection allows him to kill a large number of people, but it quickly gets unbearable, and they crash; Trinity dies as a result of her injuries.
Neo rises to meet Deus Ex Machina (Machine Leader) and comes to an agreement. Smith has gone beyond the robots’ control and is about to wipe out everything, so Neo offers to enter the Matrix and eliminate him in exchange for peace. Morpheus believes that the Sentinals have stopped assaulting Zion because of Neo’s actions.
There are basically just Smiths in the Matrix currently. The Oracle Smith steps up and declares that since he has already seen Neo’s loss, the others will only be able to observe. The two fight continuously until Neo learns that he and Smith are equals and opposites, and that if one dies, the other must as well.
Smith is able to clone himself onto Neo. The machines have a direct handle to Smith since Neo is hooked in from Machine City. They kill Neo, which completely wipes off the Smith program in the Matrix, restoring the system to its previous condition before Smith wrecked havoc. The Sentinals retreat as arranged, and Zion rejoices.
The Architect approaches The Oracle to inform her that she played a risky game, and she responds that change is inevitable. Sati creates a lovely dawn and dedicates it to Neo. The Oracle says at the conclusion of the movie that Neo could return one day.
