Charlie (Aaron Jakubenko) and his girlfriend Kaz (Katrina Bowden) are charter pilots with a failing charter company when they get an offer they can’t refuse: to charter a wealthy Asian couple to a remote island in the South Pacific for a day. They can’t afford not to accept the job since Kaz is pregnant, and all signs point to the event being quite easy and straightforward, but their clients – Michelle (Kimie Tsukakoshi) and Joji (Tim Kano) – are a bit tough with their expectations and conduct, so the ride isn’t exactly smooth. Joji, a control freak and insecure analyst, argues with Charlie’s copilot Benny (Te Kohe Tuhaka) right away, which doesn’t auger well for the rest of the journey. There’s an instant issue when they get to the atoll (Michelle has brought the ashes of her grandpa to disperse). A shark had killed at least one – perhaps two – of the individuals who were on the atoll before to their arrival, and they discover one of their bodies on the beach. Charlie gathers his clients and associates on his plane, and they begin a quick search for the other person who may or may not be alive at sea, but they’re too late to take off again when they discover the capsized boat and the other person (dead), as two great white sharks attack them, destroying their plane and forcing all five of them into an inflatable raft. As their time runs out, Charlie, Kaz, and the others grow frantic due to the continuous danger of dehydration and death from the predators surrounding them.

Although some of the CGI is a bit shaky, the finale looks excellent, and I liked how it finished. In other words, if you’re searching for a good shark movie, you’ll get your money’s worth. Even though you’re meant to dislike one of the characters, there was never a point in the picture when I got frustrated with the characters, thus director Martin Wilson produced a good film in a genre that has grown old.
Great White will be released on Blu-ray and DVD by RLJE in early September, and it will include a “Making of” feature as well as a picture gallery.
