On the March 26th episode of ABC’s 20/20, investigative journalist John Quiñones traveled to San Diego in an attempt to understand what led Gregory and Travis McMichael into committing one of America’s most notorious mass murder cases. His interviews with friends, family members, law enforcement officers and witnesses were intended to uncover how these two troubled brothers came together on a day when their lives spiraled out of control.

ABC’s 20/20: What Happened During Gregory and Travis McMichael’s Trial?

On February 23, 2020, two white guys murdered a 25-year-old black man called Ahmaud Marquez Arbery in Satilla Shores near Brunswick. William “Roddie” Bryan, a bystander, videotaped the whole event on his cellphone. The three were charged with killing the young guy and testified in court.

Bryan, on the other hand, refuted the claims, claiming that he joined the pursuit on his own after suspecting Ahmaud of stealing. But it was subsequently uncovered that the two guys that pursued Ahmaud were father and son called Gregory and Travis McMichael, who were later the ones to shoot the victim. Let’s see what this combo has been up to lately.

Gregory McMichael, a 65-year-old retired police officer, and his 35-year-old Coast Guard son Travis McMichael were charged with four counts of felony murder, one count of false imprisonment, one count of criminal attempt to commit a felony, one count of malice murder, and two counts of aggravated assault each in 2020.

Their trial started in 2021, and the defense claimed that Gregory and Travis McMichael only pursued Ahmaud because he had weapons, for which the latter might hold him. The accused went on to say that they suspected Ahmaud of stealing from local residences, which had been going on for a time in their area, and that they were prompted to act when he didn’t stop provoking them.

While Gregory sat in their pickup, Travis fired three rounds at him in the ensuing struggle. Even if he hadn’t shot him, the younger McMichael said that if he hadn’t, he would have grabbed the pistol from him and shot him instead, thus he did the necessary to preserve himself. However, the prosecution were not persuaded, believing that the father and son’s behavior of firing the victim of his alleged crime was immoral and not in any manner a form of self-defense.

They went on to say that the duo’s decision was mostly influenced by the victim’s race. During the trials, a video taken by an observer called William “Roddie” Bryan, as well as footage from police cameras, were shown, plainly demonstrating that the McMichael’s were not holding the dead. Officials who arrived at the murder scene stated that the two didn’t apologize for their conduct, but rather bragged about them without offering any assistance to the victim.

Finally, on November 24, 2021, the father and son were charged with the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old man. Travis was found guilty of all nine offenses listed above, while his father Gregory was found guilty of all crimes save malice murder by a jury of 12 members. Prosecutors have said that they will give them life sentences without the possibility of parole, but their attorneys have stated that they would file an appeal.

Their sentencing date has yet to be determined. The two will appear in federal court in February of next year to face hate crime accusations that include one count of attempted abduction, one count of interfering with the victim’s ability to use a public roadway due to his race, and one count of brandishing, carrying, and employing an arm. They will be held at the Glynn County Jail in Brunswick, Georgia, until then.

What was the name of the third person charged in the case?

A 50-year-old McMichaels’ neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan, was also found guilty of one count of aggravated assault, three charges of felony murder, one count of criminal attempt to conduct a crime, and one count of false imprisonment.

Despite the fact that the defense claimed Bryan was uninformed that his neighbors were armed and ready to murder Ahmaud. However, the prosecution pointed out that, in addition to his mistaken belief that Ahamud was a burglar, he also turned a blind eye to the victim when he was shot.
