“The Night House” is an upcoming horror film starring Rebecca Hall. The movie follows a young woman who moves into her childhood home to live with the family that lived there before, which includes two children (one of whom was born after she died). She soon learns that they are all haunted by their memories of the dead girl and must confront them in order to move on from what happened long ago.

“Not Quite the Film I Expected, But Still Among the Best I’ve Seen in a Long Time”
Rebecca Hall and Sarah Goldberg star in the lead roles.
David Bruckner is the director.
Beth is naturally confused when her husband Owen blows his brains out in their rowboat on the lake that their property overlooks.
She was completely unaware that he was sad. She had no idea they had a weapon. His note, on the other hand… Even though the message just creates additional doubts, she gets it.
“You were absolutely correct.
There isn’t anything.
Nothing is pursuing you.
“At this point, you’re safe.”
Beth was killed in a vehicle accident when she was 17 years old, and she was dead for 4 minutes. During that moment, Beth saw exactly what Owen had described: nothing. There is no hope at the end of the tunnel. If anything, she says Claire, a coworker and friend, there’s just tunnel.
So, if there isn’t anything… Who or what has taken up residence at Beth’s lake house?
One night, she has a dream in which Owen contacts her in the middle of the night, which starts her on a journey of discovery. She checked her phone the following morning, expecting a call from her husband, but there was none. But, god, that felt… alright, just to be sure, she looks through Owen’s phone as well. There were no fresh messages or phone calls to her phone. There is, however, a photograph of Beth that she was unaware he had taken.
Is that the case? That isn’t Beth, on second thinking. It LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE Beth. The same physique, with the same long, black hair. Beth, on the other hand, does not possess the shirt. So, who is this mysterious woman?
Claire informs her that there are worse things to discover than that he was cheating on her.
Beth explores the images on Owen’s computer, too, to discover who this lady was, and finds a few more shots of the same woman. Then there are other photos of different ladies, all of whom have a striking similarity to Beth at first sight.
Then there’s the incomplete mirror replica of their home that she discovers on the other side of the lake from where they dwell.
And there were the bizarre esoteric literature about mazes, as well as Owen’s scrawled message to “trick it.”
THE NIGHT HOUSE, directed by David Bruckner and written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, was a film I had skipped during its VERY brief theatrical run in August, and then its subsequent DVD release, because there had been so little hype surrounding it, and it had vanished so quickly from the theater, that my initial thought was “Well, it must have sucked.”
Then, on a horror podcast I listen to (BLOODY GOOD HORROR), I heard a review of THE NIGHT HOUSE, and the film they were discussing seemed fantastic. It also seemed extremely dismal, but the movie they were discussing was so unbelievably lovely and sincere that it sounded like the perfect thing for my wife and me to watch together.
Now, there were a few narrative details they either missed or didn’t disclose, but the movie I THOUGHT I was seeing was, for the most part, the movie I saw, with one major alteration in one of the characters’ motivations. I’m not going to get into it here since it would be a major spoiler for the movie’s finale, which I don’t want to do. Instead, I’d want you to see it, but with the awareness that it’s a really effective horror film.
The jump scares are prominent but not overbearing, and THE NIGHT HOUSE offers enough of atmosphere.
Rebecca Hall gives the finest performance of her career, and I’ve watched a lot of her work. She portrays Beth in her present position with just the appropriate amount of apathy but yet hoping that the knocks in the middle of the night and the footprints she sees heading from the water, up the pier, and into the home are Owen returning to her.
Vondie Curtis-Hall portrays Mel, a neighbor, in a character that not even Carl Lumbly could have played better, and Sarah Goldberg as Claire plays both the devil’s advocate and the kind ear who will listen to Beth’s every hypothesis.
The fact that films like THE NIGHT HOUSE get lost in the mix is a travesty. I know I would have enjoyed it much more in the theater with those speakers, as much as I enjoyed watching it on our TV with Kara next to me on the sofa and being able to stop it to go to the restroom. I didn’t include the sound design, for which I applaud whomever was in charge of this film. I can only image how much more powerful it would have been if it had been performed in a theater.
It may not be the scariest film ever produced, but Bruckner is well-versed in the genre’s cliches and expectations, and he plays with them throughout the film, leaving you awaiting the big reveal numerous times. I’ve stated all I can without giving too much away, so I’ll just say this: go see the movie. It’s one of them, so go out and get THE NIGHT HOUSE and put it in your collection.
