In the first teaser for Disney+’s National Geographic mini-series Welcome to Earth, Will Smith explores the globe. Smith began his career in music and television as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and has since become one of the most prolific and well-known actors of the past several decades. However, it was Roland Emmerich’s 1996 sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day (where the phrase “Welcome to Earth” became famous) that gave him his big Hollywood break. Smith’s most recent leading role, a return to the Bad Boys series with Bad Boys For Life, was the year’s highest-grossing theatrical picture.
Smith has been nominated for two Academy Awards, and in addition to starring in a number of notable films over the years, he has also ventured into producing and continued his music career as a solo artist. Smith will executive produce the forthcoming Fresh Prince of Bel-Air remake and is a producer on Netflix’s immensely successful Cobra Kai series. His next role will be as Richard Williams, the father and renowned coach of tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams, in the movie King Richard.
The teaser for Smith’s latest project, a six-part mini-series titled Welcome to Earth, was published today by Disney+ and NatGeo. The actor/producer will be “guided on an awe-inspiring journey by elite explorers, getting up close and personal with some of the most thrilling spectacles on the planet — from volcanoes that roar in silence to deserts that move beyond our perception to animal swarms with minds of their own,” according to the show. Darren Aronofsky, who has directed films such as Requiem For A Dream, The Wrestler, and Black Swan, as well as Smith’s own business, Westbrook Studios, are producing the series. Smith will go on a “once-in-a-lifetime journey across the globe” in the series, which will “visit Earth’s greatest marvels and expose its most hidden mysteries.” Smith has seen it everything, from mountains to deserts, seas and volcanoes to deep sea research. This is the latest in a long line of celebrity-driven reality programs, and it’s Smith’s first. Celebrity chef show Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted, which is now in season 3, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, which premiered the first five episodes of season 2 on Disney+ Day in November, and Encore! with Kristen Bell, among others, have all shown on Disney+. Disney+ also has a full NatGeo lineup, which includes everything from Running Wild with Bear Grylls to Wicked Tuna, Dog Whisperer, and other such shows.
Smith seems to have mastered every platform he’s performed on so far, so a reality-based NatGeo program on Disney+ seems like a natural next step. Smith’s charm, honesty, humility, and humor will undoubtedly make for an enjoyable journey across the globe, since the sights, sounds, and sensations of these programs are heavily influenced by the host’s presence. Traveling the globe with Will Smith would be a vacation in and of itself for most people, so seeing these natural marvels with him should be a fascinating, hilarious, and awe-inspiring experience. In December, Disney+ will premiere Welcome To Earth.
